remembering music, remembering my past

Most of the Christmas tunes flowing through my iPod these days have little chance to be highlighted on the radio, but there are exceptions.

On the way to work the other day Bruce Springsteen singing about the need to be good for goodness sake came into my presence. Memory is s strange thing. That song could have taken me to festive meals, favorite presents, traditions

Instead it took me to thinking about growing up listening to Philly rock stations in the 70's. Bruce was king around here and I must have heard him before 1978...

But memory is a funny thing and so who knows what is true. Did I discover Bruce Springsteen in the passenger seat of a 76 Monte Carlo as my dad drove me home from the doctor? maybe.

  1. I have the same kind of Bruce memories. Whatz helping me with those memories recently is a book I found on the 1978 tour, The Light in Darkness" filled with stories and photos from that tour. very enjoyable

  2. I bought a coffee at Starbucks on Thursday evening to help fuel the last night planning and grading before Winter break. Because I was also buying a gift card for the postman, they handed me a CD that included the U2 song "I believe in Father Christmas" which is a favorite among the popular Christmas music. It sounded great and I've listened to it frequently.

I enjoy vicariously listening to your iPod - maybe some day I'll have to get one of those. One of the kids gave me his castoff shuffle but I haven't really had time to mess with it yet.

  3. Bruce Springsteen is too far down the road, too "modern" for my memories. By the 70's I had stepped into the church and, for a long while, while I didn't abandon secular music all together, mostly my life was occupied with gospel songs. It's funny, though, how songs as far back as the 40s, 50s, and 60s so often pop into my mind out of nowhere and the mention of a phrase, a word, can take me back to a place, an event, a face from so long ago......

  4. Kathryn... only to places I listen to an iPod... my car (through the stereo system) and the gym. glad you enjoy my music.

Jim-- for me it is the 60's 70's and 80's. after that I'm lost in the world of pop music.
